Many underwater imaging enthusiasts have expressed their desire to upgrade from their compact camera systems to achieve better performance. However, they are often hesitant to give up the compact form factor and user-friendly nature of these cameras. Similarly, world travelers have been looking for ways to downsize from their DSLRs without compromising on performance. In response to this growing interest, Nauticam has developed the NA-R50, a housing specifically designed for Canon's highly acclaimed and compact EOS R50 mirrorless APS-C camera.

The primary objective behind the creation of the NA-R50 housing was to design the most compact and user-friendly solution possible. Nauticam's industry-leading engineers took on the challenge of creating a housing that would be as straightforward and simple to use as their renowned compact camera housings, while also ensuring superior imaging capabilities. This innovative housing represents a new category for Nauticam, while still maintaining the company's well-known ergonomics and commitment to quality.

THE NA-R50 Housing

The NA-R50 Underwater housing by Nauticam is a testament to the company's commitment to pushing the boundaries of underwater housing technology. Designed specifically for the Canon EOS R50 camera, this housing incorporates all the features that have made Nauticam housings popular among underwater photographers while maintaining a small and lightweight form factor.

The innovative design of the NA-R50 housing revolves around the Canon RF-S 18-45 F4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens, which is highly versatile and practical for underwater photography with the Canon RF APS-C format. The lens is seamlessly integrated into the housing, eliminating the need for additional maintenance. It delivers excellent results in a range of wide to narrow fish portrait field of view, and when paired with Nauticam's WWL-1 or WWL-C wide angle lenses, it offers exceptional sharpness and full zoom-through capability while maintaining a compact size. For even greater versatility, Nauticam's Compact Macro Converter water contact optics can be added, allowing for a comprehensive system that is suitable for any type of underwater shooting and can easily fit in a traveler's carry-on.

Crafted from durable aluminum, the NA-R50 housing is not only lighter but also more compact compared to previous Canon APS-C systems. It is an ideal choice for photographers who seek outstanding image and video quality with industry-leading autofocus performance, all while enjoying the convenience of minimal bulk and maintenance. The housing is ready to be submerged right out of the box, as the zoom gear is included. Simply combine it with the R50 camera and RFS 18-45 lens, and you're ready to capture stunning underwater shots.

COMPACT AND VERSATILE

The NA-R50 underwater housing is designed with compact dimensions, allowing for handheld use without the need for a tray, providing users with the ultimate freedom. It measures just 238mm (9.3in) in width, 150mm (5.9in) in height, and 115mm (4.5in) in depth. This small footprint sets it apart from previous APS-C camera housings, making it highly attractive and convenient for travel purposes.

WHICH WET LENSES SHOULD I PAIR WITH THE NA-R50?

Nauticam has gained well-deserved recognition for their groundbreaking optical designs for underwater photography. These optics have been a particular passion of Nauticam's founder and Managing Director, Edward Lai, and the NA-R50 underwater system offers several exceptional options with outstanding in-water performance. The versatility of wet lenses is truly remarkable, allowing underwater photographers to switch between macro and super wide-angle perspectives on the same dive. Here are some recommended options:

WWL-1B: This wide-angle conversion lens is an ideal companion for the Canon RF-S 18-45 F4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens. It provides a crisp 130-degree diagonal field of view at 18mm, with full zoom-through capability up to approximately 60 degrees at 45mm. The WWL-1B ensures exceptional close-focus wide-angle capability at all focal lengths, delivering sharper performance compared to traditional dome ports.

WWL-C: For those seeking an even smaller wide-angle option without compromising quality, Nauticam's WWL-C is an excellent choice. This compact all-glass optic matches the sharpness of the WWL-1B and offers a zoom range from 116 degrees at 18mm to about 52 degrees at 45mm. Additionally, it provides front optic focusing.

CMC-1 & CMC-2: Macro enthusiasts also have options with Nauticam's lightweight CMC-1 and CMC-2 lenses, which offer ultimate image quality and improved autofocus performance. The maximum magnification is achieved at a focal length of 45mm. The CMC-1 provides higher magnification but requires more skill, while the CMC-2 offers a substantial 0.6X magnification and is more forgiving.

These recommended options cater to a wide range of underwater photography preferences, allowing photographers to capture stunning images with enhanced versatility and image quality.

FLASHTRIGGERING

The NA-R50 underwater housing features a convenient flash triggering system that utilizes the pop-up flash of the Canon EOS R50 camera. This integration allows for easy compatibility with strobes that have fiber optic connections. Strobes that support STTL (Standard TTL) capability through fiber optics offer the added benefit of full TTL compatibility with the R50, providing precise and automated flash exposure control.

INTEGRATED VACUUM AND LEAK DETECTION

The NA-R50 housing includes Nauticam's vacuum check and leak detection electronics as standard equipment. When combined with an accessory M16 vacuum valve (25625), this monitoring system provides continuous updates on the housing's watertight and dive-ready status. A user-friendly color-coded LED lighting system indicates whether the vacuum is secure or if there is a loss of vacuum. The same circuit also incorporates leak detection, triggering an audible and visual indication in case of water intrusion.

One notable feature of the Nauticam system is its temperature compensation capability, which prevents false alarms caused by changes in outside temperature or the camera heating up during an action-packed dive. This ensures accurate and reliable monitoring of the housing's integrity throughout various diving conditions.
